Lyrebird College – The Countdown Begins

After years of planning for the first stage of Lyrebird College (a proposed specialist school for students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder), the school board is preparing to open in January 2021 subject to Victorian Registration Qualification Authority (VRQA) approval.

A team of community volunteers formed the College Board back in 2016 and have worked tirelessly towards registering the school in Victoria since that time. As part of the process, Fleetwood have been working closely with the Board and its volunteers as we get underway with building what will be the first facility for the school located in the Yarra Ranges.

With the Board privately raising funds for the project over the last four years, Fleetwood have been able to come up with a fast and effective modular solution for the site. With only six months to the proposed opening, heading down the path of offsite prefabrication was the most efficient and effective solution for the school due to several reasons.

Based in the Yarra Ranges, the school will be located between the Coldstream Primary School and Kindergarten. The location is ideal for the College as they will be able to serve many families in the Eastern Corridor of Melbourne as well as becoming part of the re-energised Coldstream Education Precinct consisting of the Coldstream Primary School, Yarra Ranges Kindergarten, Maternal Health Centre and playgroup.

On Tuesday July 7th, the team (pictured below) was on site to witness the ‘turning of soil’ which was a momentous milestone for Lyrebird College and Fleetwood. The special needs school will provide a quality, tailored and outcome focused education option for families with a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder in a fun and safe setting.

The education choice for a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder is an important decision a family has to make and Fleetwood are honoured to be able to help another local community meet the challenge of providing the very best education facilities for its students.

If all goes to plan, Lyrebird College will open in January 2021 with an initial enrolment of 14 students in 2 classes with the opportunity to grow in the future.
