Gympie Hospital Accommodation

Essential Accommodation for Healthcare Workers in Queensland

Overview

Fleetwood Australia was selected by Queensland Health to design, manufacture and install modern and comfortable on-site accommodation suitable for short-term stays by doctors and other healthcare professionals working at Gympie Hospital. Gympie is located 170 kilometres north of Brisbane and like many regional locations, it relies on visiting health professionals to help service a growing community. But a lack of existing and suitable short-term accommodation in the town was a barrier to attracting visiting staff.

Solution

Fleetwood managed all aspects of the project – from design, to manufacturing, installation and service connection – and delivered a tailored solution that met a variety of needs for Gympie Hospital. Rooms are well-appointed and spacious, with a hotel-like feel that enhances the experience of visiting hospital staff and double-glazing that reduces noise and possible disruptions as workers move on and off shift. There are also good opportunities to socialise through a communal-use deck that offers scenic and elevated views over bushland.

The completed project includes:

  • 24 rooms, each with a , couch, study area and dining space
  • Reverse cycle air-conditioning and ensuites in each room
  • Keycard access throughout accommodation area, providing strong security
  • Fully-equipped shared kitchen and dining facilities
  • Covered rear deck overlooking tree-lined surrounds.

Benefits

Gympie Hospital now has fit-for-purpose short-term accommodation that it can use as a selling point to help attract the health professionals it requires. Existing accommodation on-site, which was demolished and removed as part of this project, was dated and not suited to the volume of visiting staff or their needs. Key workers travelling to Gympie Hospital now have access to quarters that offer them a variety of choices and settings – whether they seek to relax or work in the comfort and privacy of their own rooms or socialise with colleagues in the shared kitchen/dining area or on the scenic back deck.

The advantage of modular building is reflected by the accelerated timeframe in which Fleetwood Australia was able to deliver this project. The sloping terrain of the site meant that traditional construction would have taken more than a year and involved the management of working-with-height risks. By going modular, Queensland Health was able to undertake manufacturing in a controlled and safe factory setting and have a modern solution available inside eight months, ready for the start of 2024.
